Creditors with consumer customers, including sole traders, need to be prepared for the government’s Debt Respite Scheme beginning today. Individuals with problems paying their bills can seek a 60-day breathing space, in which time creditors must stop all contact with them and must not add interest or cost to their account in this period. Stricter rules apply to individuals undergoing mental health problems; here, the breathing space must span the individuals’ mental health treatment period.
